Veil of perception…

Work in progress…

Have you ever gazed at the rain and wondered if these were tears from otherworldly beings? As if African ancestors were blessing us, bathing us in their grace?
This new work is part of an ongoing research in which the natural flow of raindrops generates melodies in real time, as though they were messages from beyond the veil of our perception.

In this generative video work, David Gumbs explores how rain and subaquatic imagery can shape a new sensory language.
The audiovisual landscape is composed in real time through a custom algorithm that transforms raindrops and underwater movements into sound.
Each droplet that strikes the lens, each ripple, each floating particle becomes a note or texture in a continuously evolving sonic environment.

Months of experimentation were required to develop a system capable of interpreting fluid motion and precipitation as data for real-time sound generation.
This meticulous process bridges visual poetry and algorithmic structure, allowing Gumbs to craft an experience where water does not just appear, it speaks, resonates, and listens.

Through Veil of Perception, Gumbs invites us to perceive the world through a different frequency, where sound emerges not from instruments, but from the quiet dialogue between the elements and our attention. It’s an ongoing research with “Be the tides of infinite passage“.
